For the purpose of - hei

For the purpose of, as, as a means of, for the purpose of doing something.

Hei must be followed by a transitive verb, and can't be followed by an intransitive verb or a passive verb. (You can't say hei noho or hei tirohia.)

Can can be followed by a verb (in order to do something) or a noun (as something).

Kainga i waho, ke whakaritea he tohunga hei whāngai mō Tū-whakairi-ora.
They ate out of doors, and a tohunga was appointed to feed Tū-whakairi-ora.

Kei te haere au ki Te Tai Hauāuru hei hui ki te marae.
I'm going to the Westland region to meet up at the marae.

Rawe hoki te huka me te wai rēmana hei kīnaki.
The sugar and lemon juice are also great as a garnish.

Kei konei koe hei āwhina.
You're here to help.

Anei he pukapuka hei āwhina i a koe.
Here's a book to help you.
