"Demonstratives" are words that go before a noun:
te whare
ngā tamariki
he kurī
tōku hoa
tēnei pukapuka
ēnei hoiho
etc
The demonstratives taua is used to indicate something that has been previously or recently discussed.
taua kurī - that dog (we have been talking about)
taua whare - that (aforementioned) house
As with other demonstratives such as tēnēi and tōku the plural is made by dropping the initial t:
aua kurī - those dogs (we have been talking about)
aua whare - those (aforementioned) houses
He roa noa atu te kōrero a te iwi nei i taua pō.
The tribe's discussion that night lasted for a long time.Kua pāngia taua wahine e te mate.
That woman has been touched by sickness.He pai rawa atu kia a au taua pōwhiri.
I really enjoyed that pōwhiri.Ko Ngāti-Kahukoka e mea ana nā rātou taua wāhi moana.
Ngāti-Kahukoka said that part of the sea belonged to them.Nōna te waka. He koretake taua mea.
