When? (in the future) - Āwhea? Āhea?

Āwhea and āhea (which are variants of the same word) are used to ask when something will happen in the future. They are related to ihea and iwhea which ask when something happened in the past.

It can be used with the formular: Āwhea (subject) (verb) ai?  

Āwhea koe waiata ai? 
When will you sing?

Āhea tātou haere atu ai?
When will we leave?

When the sentence uses a person pronoun (koe, koutou, tātou, etc), it comes after āwhea. However, when a person's name or a noun is used it can coe either after āwhea or after the verb:

Āhea a Rangi kōrero ai?
Āhea kōrero ai a Rangi?

When will Rangi speak?

Āwhea ngā tamariki tākaro ai?
Āwhea tākaro ai ngā tamariki?

When will the children play?

A question with āhea should be answered with a sentence starting with ā:

Āhea koutou hoki atu ai ki tō koutou kāinga?
When are you returning to your home?

Ā te ahiahi.
In the afternoon.

Āwhea tāua haere ai?
When shall we go?

Ā hea te kemu?
When is the game?

Āwhea a Pāora ngaki māra ai?
When will Pāora dig the garden?

Āwhea a Ataahua hoko ai i tana pahikara hou?
When is Ataahua buying his new bike?

Āwhea a Manu ako waiata tawhito ai?
When will Manu learn ancient songs?

Āwhea hoko ai a Aria i tana pahikara hou?
When is Aria buying his new bike?

Āhea koe ka kai?
When will you eat?

Āwhea a Riripeti hoko kai ai?
When will Riripeti buy food?

Āwhea a Tame tīmata ai?
When does Tame start?

Āwhea koe peka mai ai?
When will you pop in?

When will you mow the lawn?

Āhea ngā kau kai ai?
When will the cows eat?

Āwhea ai te hui?
When will the hui take place?

Āwhea kōrua rere ai ki Ōtautahi?
When do you two fly to Ōtautahi?

Āwhea kōrua rere ai ki Ōtautahi?
When are you two flying to Christchurch?
